Hey Eric: Google TV Ads, Presented by Microsoft Office
By DONNA BOGATIN • Jun 25th, 2008 • Category: CONFERENCE CIRCUITWhile the blogosphere (continues) to poke fun at Microsoft software’s expense, in the real world, the Microsoft desktop continues its competitive fun in thwarting Google’s dream of Googley “cloud computing” rule.
Dear Mr. Schmidt: If you can’t displace your arch enemy Microsoft from your own sales team, why should GOOG shareholders have faith in Sergey‘s, Larry’s and your own “long-term fantasies” that Google will be the sole world wide destination for “searching through all the world’s books” and that iGoogle will “get to know “the world’s inhabitants “so well” Google will “understand” how we think and “mimic behavior,” and that Google will succeed in obtaining all the world’s personal and professional information within the Google world wide cloud?
While your Google TV Ads team purchased the ultimate “Platinum” product spiel pitch honors at The Advertising Research Foundation’s Audience Measurement conference underway in New York City to coincide with your product roadmap calendar, the acquired “keynote” rights, thankfully for the integrity of the world’s information, did not include immunity from audience indignation over Google secrecy about the real workings of all of your ARF touted “game changing” new services.
I (exclusively) broke the news yesterday that “Advertisers Demand Google Pass MRC Audit for Ad Planner ”: ARF researcher audience unrest vs. a vs. Google non-transparency and demands for MRC accreditation of Google products continued unabated today following Keval Desai‘s dedicated “keynote” presentation cum sales call for Google TV Ads.
One thing Desai could NOT hide today, however, was his professional dependence upon number one Google competitor Microsoft to perform his Googley job: Microsoft Office PowerPoint, Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player were the presentation tools “of choice” for Google TV Ads “unveiling” before The Advertising Research Foundation.
I happened to be sitting behind Desai for the following panel and after that session took the opportunity to ask him WHY he did NOT use the Google Apps family of “software” to make his public presentation. “Good question,” Desai replied.
“There is no Internet connectivity here, and Google Docs are hosted applications,” Desai “explained.“ He then asked me, “Makes sense?”
NO, I responded, given Googler-In-Chief Eric Schmidt’s determination for world wide domination. After all, how will he convince all of the world’s inhabitants to allow Google to “organize” all of their “information” in the Google cloud, if Google TV Ads, itself, must rely on the Microsoft software desktop to deliver a “Platinum” sponsorship sales promo in front of hundreds of advertisers, media planers and advertising agency execs?
Desai told me he doesn’t believe he has heard his boss talk of world domination ambitions and asked me if I had. I informed the Google TV Ads exec that I am quite familiar with Schmidt’s “forward looking” musings and would be happy to email him the citations. As no Gmail address was forthcoming, however, a recent Schmidt Google power declaration is below:
It is possible to build a culture around optimism. Google is an example…of a culture that can be built based on relatively scalable principles. We could run out country this way, We could run the world this way.
While discussing Google Apps ability to displace Microsoft Office last year, Schmidt said: “Companies are tired of dealing with the complexity of the old (Microsoft) model, and our products are now strong enough that they really can reliably serve a corporation.”
REALLY? Eighteen months later and Google Apps STILL can‘t serve $170 billion corporation Google!
Desai’s incredulousness over talk of Google’s ambition to “organize” ALL of the world is disingenuous. The Advertising Research Foundation, itself, concluded Desai’s own “Platinum” sponsorship presentation by “jokingly” pre-announcing next year‘s Googley contribution to the conference: Google President!
Who needs Barack or John?
