Tim Berners-Lee: Top Six Semantic Web Data Tips, Live From NY

What should data owners do when they are ready to “do the semantic Web right”? Tim Berners-Lee shared his six top tips this evening in a presentation designed to illustrate how to best take advantage of the “most potentially world-changing linked open data movement.”
Billed as the “first commercial conference” on the subject, Berners-Lee delivered a keynote before an audience of about 200 developers and managers at the Linked Data Planet conference in New York City.
While Firefox threw itself a worldwide party today, the “inventor” of the World Wide Web offered no congratulations to Mozilla, but rather a sly acknowledgement that as of today, his own coded “add-on” would now be “broken” due to the latest Firefox release: “The Tabulator,“ which Berners-Lee affectionately calls his “toy semantic Web browser.”
Nevertheless, Berners-Lee’s enthusiasm for the next great “paradigm shift” on the Web is unabated: He called for a continuation of the momentum that is building to create the “ultimate human interface to all the data there is.”
BY “connecting different things together, using diverse ontologies,” a semantic Web of linked open data will be the “Web of the future,“ one which is dependent upon BOTH documents and data.
The six top things data owners should do to prepare for the new and improved data Web, according to Tim Berners-Lee:
Take inventory of your data,
Decide priorities for, and benefits of, data,
Use existing ontologies,
Don’t change the way data is currently managed,
Set up standard (RDF, SPARG) portals onto existing data,
Where necessary, adopt or write new ontology bits.
