Sen. Kerry: NANO Congress WILL Fund $2.6 trillion Technology Boon

By DONNA BOGATIN • May 9th, 2008 • Category: CONFERENCE CIRCUIT

5908jk.jpg “There is not a lot of big thinking going on” in our nation’s capital, Senator John Kerry (D-MA) confided this week while keynoting a NanoBusiness 2008 Conference luncheon in New York City. Sen. Kerry derided Washington DC–where he is a key player–as a “nano” political world where “we’re not getting a lot done.“

Nevertheless, Sen. Kerry conveyed his optimism to several hundred scientists, executives and investors, that the U.S. government would fully step up to the nano plate by updating and expanding the National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) with a NNI Amendments Act to realize the benefits of the promise of nanotechnology by:

Increasing support for commercialization,
Fostering a nanotechnology workforce by improving science education,
Researching environmental, health and safety implications of new nanotechnologies.

Sen. Kerry is the Senate Science, Technology and Innovation Subcommittee Chairman and he pledged his support to moving the NNI legislation forward.

The nanotechnology field represents a potential $2.6 trillion market opportunity by 2014, Sen. Kerry noted. Along with artificial intelligence, robotics and advanced communications, nanotechnology is “one of the most promising” U.S. areas of technology innovation, he said.

Sen. Kerry told the nano audience what it wanted to hear about the nano industry, while serving up a bit of self-effacing entertainment as well.

Recalling his failed presidential bid–he “proudly” won more party votes than any other democratic presidential candidate to date–Sen. Kerry recounted how he was recently flagged down in an airport by someone hailing, “hey you look just like that Kerry fellow.“ Before the Senator had a chance to respond, the man concluded, “it stinks, doesn’t it.”
