Google Cheer: Yahoo Trashing, Microsoft Bashing
By DONNA BOGATIN • May 5th, 2008 • Category: BIG PICTUREMicrosoft baiting was yesterday’s Google cheerleading game. Today, Yahoo gets the big, bad Google fan boy (mis)treatment.
‘Two losers’ is how the unofficial Google blogosphere rep–Search Engine Land–characterizes Microsoft and Yahoo because Steve Ballmer has declined to wage a hostile takeover fight. Following his thrashing of the “foolish” Microsoft CEO yesterday, Danny Sullivan now derides Yahoo’s founder and leader, Jerry Yang:
Frankly, I’ve joked a lot on how this fairly unprecedented barrage of product launches felt a lot like SS Yahoo seeing torpedos coming in the water and throwing everything they have overboard in hopes of blocking them. Some of these product launches have felt rushed and incomplete, pushed forward to try and prove to anyone wondering that yes, Yahoo has cool ideas and activity within it. I don’t know that naming them off again will reassure investors,
UNPRECEDENTED????? Number one Google–the king of “BETA” services–hails its “innovation” strategy of non-stop, rapid-fire “rushed and incomplete” releases, hoping something or other in the Google product “blizzard” will stick, and Wall Street will notice.
What Google is trying to prove to shareholders is that it is NOT a one-trick, (rich) search engine (monopoly) pony. Eric Schmidt and company have been “losing” that game, though: GOOG is still stubbornly 99% SEM pure, despite billions in diversification investment!
