Voodoo YouTube: Missing Partner Money, Phony Video Stats
By DONNA BOGATIN • Mar 27th, 2008 • Category: BIG PICTURE“You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time,” Abraham Lincoln optimistically mused, well before “organize all the world’s information” power hungry Google blasted onto the multi-billion dollar corporate global scene, seemingly succeeding in fooling practically all of the media all of the time!
Google’s latest oxymoronic YouTube tale, for example, claiming “detailed statistics,” that is dutifully regurgitated via, and approved by, mainstream media and the blogosphere alike:
New York Times; “In a move to provide better data to its users…YouTube Insight provides a detailed view of a video’s popularity.”
TechCrunch; “The break down via country and state is handy. This will suit most YouTube users.”
CNET Editor-In-Chief; “Indeed, with about one-third of videos online in the U.S. viewed via YouTube and publishers and advertisers seeking more revenue and exposures, Insight will be a popular tool.”
WOW! The CNET editorial team can vouch for YouTube’s future? Too bad it doesn’t have a handle on its own content “underperformance”: Just ask Jana Partners!
CNET, TechCrunch, et al, dutifully reposted promotional graphics of the so-called YouTube “Insights” purportedly “detailed” video analytics tool, while at the same time neglecting to inform their readers of the actual inherently non-insightful nature of the co-hyped, but deliberately misleading, Google system.
YouTube, in its own disclaiming words, on how UNRELIABLE, UNINSIGHTFUL, UNINFORMATIVE, its mis-named “Insights,” really is:
THE DATA REPRESENTED IN THE GRAPHS IS AN INFORMATIONAL, AGGREGATE REPRESENTATION AND THE NUMBER OF ACTUAL VIEWS MAY BE HIGHER OR LOWER.
Relative popularity formulas? Colorful world maps? Such is NOT the stuff real, meaningful analytics is made of, ie., cold, hard, ACCURATE, data!
How about cold hard YouTube cash?
Google claims to now provide its users with the “answers” to YouTube video view questions they deserve, but it is merely rolling out the latest self-serving mechanism for inciting “broadcast yourself” content creators to continue to do so, for Google’s unique shareholder advantage. Ditto for the revenue sharing promises YouTube dangles before indie content “broadcast yourself” “partners.”

Phony video stats + missing partner money = VOODO YOUTUBE.
