Silicon Alley YouTube Star to Google: WHERE Is My Money?

By DONNA BOGATIN • Mar 25th, 2008 • Category: BIG PICTURE

For big profit Google pushes a new (so-called) “non-profit” Googley push to ensure the social Web is programmed to its profitable “open” specifications. Google’s YouTube is ALREADY a NO-PROFITS zone, for the social video creators it piggybacks off of, Silicon Alley YouTube star xGogoBeanx, for example.

New York, New York, if you can make it HERE you can make it anywhere! Silicon Alley go-getters are indeed making it in the heart of the big apple: Fame is often a far cry from fortune, however, even in the business capital of the world, Manhattan.

Jill Hanner is a full blown, self-made New York YouTube star, catching the creative eye of Coolio and racking up millions of views on her xGoboBeanx YouTube channel. A YouTube fan/fanatic since June 2006, Xgobobeanx even helped put YouTube on the Greenwich Village map, organizing a YouTuber Washington Square Park festival last summer. Google has apparently taken notice, xGogoBeanx has been annointed a YouTube Partner! YAY? NO WAY!

What has almost two years of non-stop dedication to helping build out You Tube’s “broadcast yourself” video assets yielded xGogoBeanx in monetary terms from YouTube’s deep-pocketed Google? NOTHING, not a single penny.

I spoke with Hanner last evening at the “Big Screen, Little Screen” get together at Silicon Alley’s “For Your Imagination” video production studios about the YouTube path to (starving?) star status: Don’t give up your day job, would be future members of the YouTube million video views club.

Show xGogoBeanx the money, Google! You need such creative, productive indie producers to fuel your continued growth, that is why you created You Tube “Partners.” Why are you not fulfilling your promise to PAY those that toil night and day to drive the video comments, subscriptions, friends that support Google’s continued rise in the video kingdom?

XGogoBeanx has not seen a dime from YouTube:  Her partner account holds out the promise of a few dollars pocket change, but even such pittances have not materialized, “thanks” to Google’s big, black (not so) “revenue sharing” box.

The “zero budget video industry” nevertheless continues to thrive in Silicon Alley, witness the inspired work showcased last evening by host Matthew Semel of 10Ton.tv:

Jesse Cowell, producer of the Drawn by Pain live action fused with animation series, dedicates his sweat equity, and financial capital as well, to ensure his artistic partners experience the thrill of “opening night” at Tribeca Cinemas.

Jamison Tilsner, of Tilzy.TV is laboring to sift through the good, the bad and the ugly of “television on the Web,” to surface an Internet TV “richer” than old-school TV.

Web video may indeed be richer than plain old television, but that doesn’t mean its creators are getting rich (YET)!
