Why Obsession is GOOD for Startups, and Microsoft

By DONNA BOGATIN • Mar 7th, 2008 • Category: BIG PICTURE

Poor Steve Ballmer? While Google “passion,” aka its unbridled, relentless, profit-motivated determination to control “the world’s information,” is inexorably cheered on by an ever growing Google fan club, Microsoft’s enthusiasm for winning, in the person of CEO Steve Ballmer, is routinely ridiculed

Ought unbridled corporate determination to succeed in new markets really be diagnosed by laymen as medically “unhealthy”?   NO!

Steve Ballmer’s undying support of the corporation he represents ought to be applauded as an example for executives the world over to emulate. I experienced first hand the Microsoft CEO’s on-stage vim and vigor during a National Retail Foundation keynote last year, and he is contagious!

As I launch my own startup for startups today–STARTUPALPHA.COM–I am inspired by Steve Ballmer’s leadership and I encourage all entrepreneurs to “attack” their new ventures with equal passion and determination, as new STARTUP CHATTER contributor Monica Doss also advises.

In my exclusive STARTUP CHATTER Q & A with Doss, the President & CEO of the North Carolina Research Triangle Council for Entrepreneurial Development, the veteran supporter of technology entrepreneurship underscores how successful entrepreneurs share a healthy embrace of what some may characterize as “unhealthy” winning conviction.”

I asked Doss which personal qualities are essential for an entrepreneurial win: “Stamina, mental and physical,” Doss told me, sharing a personal anecdote of not so “unhealthy“ entrepreneurship:

A friend who is on a second software startup broke his wrist and when the doctor advised waiting a few days before setting it in a cast, this enrepreneur took that as a green light to go on a week long, coast to coast business trip. Now that the cast is on, he has never mentioned pain, only the inconvenience of having to type with his left hand. I am not making this up and it is not even unusual.
